1. Our Solar System is really old - The Solar System is the region that is covered by the Sun's gravity. Accurately speaking, it is 4.571 billion years old. Scientists estimate that in about 5 billion years, our Sun will expand becoming a Red Giant (I will write on this later). In about 7.5 billion years its expanding surface will swallow up and engulf the Earth.
2. Space is completely silent - Sound needs a medium to travel. Since there is no atmosphere in space, there is no way sound can travel. We hear sounds on Earth because there is a medium through which it can travel, air. No such thing in space. Astronauts in space use radio waves to communicate with one another. Radio waves can travel through a vacuum.
3. Venus is the hottest planet on our Solar System - Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system and has an average surface temperature of around 450° C.
4. The Sun is gigantic - The Sun is so big that one million Earths can fit right into the Sun. And there are stars far bigger than the Sun (the Sun is a star and it is the closet star to us). The second closest star to us is known as Proxima Centauri. It is trillions of kilometers away. Compared to other stars, the Sun is average sized.
5. Space has a whole lot of junk - Space junk is any human-made object orbiting Earth that no longer serves a useful purpose. Scientists estimate there are about 500,000 pieces of space junk today, including fragments from rockets and satellites, and everyday items like spanners dropped during construction of the International Space Station!
